On March 7, 2012 Apple released iOS 5.1 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. This major update was released soon after Apple had made the official New iPad announcement. Since then an update to iOS 5.1 has been anticipated, particularly because jailbreakers were able to have their way with iOS 5.1. Apple fixes vulnerabilities that jailbreakers use in it’s firmware updates.
The release notes of iOS 5.1.1 firmware for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch are quite detailed. Here’s what’s new in iOS 5.1.1:
This update contains improvements and bug fixes, including:
1. Improves reliability of using HDR option for photos taken using the Lock Screen shortcut
2. Addresses bugs that could prevent the new iPad from switching between 2G and 3G networks
3. Fixes bugs that affected AirPlay video playback in some circumstances
4. Improved reliability for syncing Safari bookmarks and Reading List
5. Fixes an issue where ‘Unable to purchase’ alert could be displayed after successful purchase
The release notes are quite self explanatory and don’t require further paraphrasing. Obviously it is imperative that you upgrade your supported iOS devices to iOS 5.1.1 so as to fix critical bugs and get security and performance enhancements. This update carries build number 9B206. If you go ahead and download right now, do keep in mind that Apple’s servers will be slammed with immense amounts of traffic, which will result in slower download speeds. So if you want a swift download, it’s always best to wait for at least a day before installing a new iOS firmware version.
There are two methods that you can use in order to install iOS 5.1.1 on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. You can plug in your device to the computer, launch iTunes and click Download and Install when iTunes prompts you that iOS 5.1.1 is available for your particular device. Alternatively, you can manually download iOS 5.1.1 ipsw for your respective device from the links given down below and do a manual firmware restore on your device using iTunes.
